manage a network of university partners, disseminate our toolkits and
other teaching resources, and lead the development of new curricula for

The Solutions Journalism Network is an independent non-profit organization, formed by a team of experienced reporters and editors, that works to legitimize the practice of “solutions journalism” — rigorous and compelling reporting about responses to social problems — to advance news that is constructive, comprehensive and faithful to reality. Through curriculum development, newsroom partnerships, collaborations with journalism schools, and network activities, SJN is driving practice change in journalism, catalyzing critical and clear-eyed reporting that elevates public discourse and better empowers and engages citizens.
We’re looking for an Education Director to codify the intellectual and ethical grounding of this work, and to embed the teaching of this practice in multiple channels. SJN already has produced a range of toolkits, webinars, and other resources, available for free via our website. Moving ahead, we will offer this content through diverse formats and distribution mechanisms, reaching more journalists via more channels. Specifically, we are creating an online course on Poynter Institute’s NewsU site; and we are negotiating with several potential university partners on the development of journalism-school curricula.
The Education Director will lead the development, pilot and spread of all curricula, working closely with SJN’s newsroom and network development staff.

- Direct the presentation and deployment of SJN’s curricula and teaching resources, online and in person
- Lead the creation of new educational products, including an online course with Poynter Institute and journalism school curricula
- Build up, inspire, and manage a network of university partners
- Develop new creative teaching tools to assist journalists and journalism educators
- Have at least 5 years of experience in journalism, and preferably experience with journalism education as well
- Be a terrific communicator, both on the page and in person
- Be a self-starting entrepreneur with project management skills
- Be enthusiastic about creative storytelling opportunities
- Be patient and persistent with partners
- Genuinely believe that journalism and society will benefit by the spread of the solutions approach
