ABOUT ACCORD

The African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) is a South African-based civil society institution working throughout Africa to bring creative African solutions to the challenges posed by conflict on the continent. ACCORD's primary aim is to influence political developments by bringing conflict resolution, dialogue and institutional development to the forefront as an alternative to armed violence and protracted conflict. ACCORD specialises in conflict management, analysis and prevention and intervenes in conflicts through mediation, negotiation, training, research and conflict analysis.
ACCORD is recruiting for a Co-ordinator in its Peacekeeping Unit (PKU), to be based in its office in Durban, South Africa.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Co-ordinator of the Peacekeeping Unit is to lead the strategic and substantive co-ordination and implementation of all initiatives in the Peacekeeping Unit. S/he has to provide support to the Manager of the Interventions Department in meeting the objectives and implementation of the Peacekeeping Unit. The specific tasks are, but are no limited to:
Co-ordinating the strategic and operational design and planning for the unit:
  • Developing a detailed implementation plan for the Interventions Department (Peacekeeping);
  • Identifying all the activities, events, seminars & research outputs;
  • Co-ordinating strategic planning and operational design for unit;
  • Planning, organising and implementing each output;
  • Designing & fundraising for grant for new activities and peacekeeping interventions.
Co-ordinating the outputs and overseeing the implementation of activities within the Unit:
  • Managing the implementation of activities against the year plan;
  • Co-ordinating the assessment and review of the unit;
  • Administering management;
  • Liaising and networking with stakeholders and representing ACCORD at functions;
  • Researching, writing and co-authoring articles.
Personnel Management:
  • Management of personnel in the unit.
Financial Management:
  • Preparation and oversight of the annual budgets for the unit;
  • Monitoring the financial planning and expenditure for each unit activity;
  • Liaison and correspondence with donors.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-graduate degree (Masters) in International Relations with Peace and Security Specialisation or Conflict Resolution;
  • 5–7 years operational and programme experience in the peacekeeping field with at least 2–3 years management experience;
  • Substantive knowledge in the field of peacekeeping in Africa that integrates policy, practice and research and addresses emerging issues in peace and security;
  • Fluency in English is essential. Fluency in French is desirable.
  • Ability to conceptualise and analyse complex information;
  • Attention to detail, plan and prioritise work, meet deadlines to successfully deliver to a diversity of objectives and demands;
  • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database packages.
