Edwin Nuvaga Fongod: New Director General Of Cameroon Customs. Recognition of Anglophone talent?

Divine Nchamukong
8:24pm, Monday December 21, 2015

In a pluralistic society as Cameroon no one expects everyone to beat drums of praise following the appointment of Mr Fongod as head of a body as corrupt as the word itself.

However one thing most people are going to be unanimous on is Ewdin's professional lucidity and his uncompromising attitude to corruption. I am not just excited about him being on one of the country's most covetous seats because he is of English speaking expression as I am but because more Paul Biya appears to recognize that Anglophones are those you can trust to handle the country's most significant income pipeline. I am by no means saying all Anglophones are spotless yet one time DG of the nation's customs Raymond Gwanyalla's performance proves my point.

All said and done, at the end of the day only God alone knows the heart of men. All Cameroonian Anglophones look forward to Edwin Nuvaga Fongod to demonstrate the superior qualities he is made of but also to leave his foot prints in the sands of time. Being Director General of Cameroon Customs is a lucrative position. Edwin must be aware and I trust he is since he is a believer that more than ever this is when Satan lines up his best band to tempt him. Resisting the cash thrown around him as customs boss is going to take more than determination. It is going to take prayer.......a lot of it.
Ba Nkom as we call you in Bali ( a traditional title) make us Balis proud. Make Anglophones proud by standing up to the forces of evil that sure will multiply around you. Through your performance Paul Biya would invest more in your fellow brothers in the challenging task of cleaning up corruption in the country now walking about as human beings. Congratulations and may God help you through.

  6. Dear brothers and sisters, no geographical area should claim Edwin because he is a national and international figure. A woman's child in the womb becomes every body's at birth. Though an intellectual of high repute, he is a down to earth fellow and very friendly with the many poor businessmen and buyam sellams. I think therefore that his appointment has been based on merit rather than origin.
When he was custom chief of sector for the Northwest Region, his round table conferences with business people during the international world custom day were so educative and made traders to know that customs and businessmen were partners in development. This greatly reduced smuggling. He also dialogued with his West Region colleague and movement of goods from the seaport town of Douala was eased to an extend. Since he was transferred, unbreakable barriers have been erected again between the Littoral and Northwest Regions thereby stifling economic activities in the Northwest Region. All the Northwest business operators have consequently moved away to try business elsewhere. God alone knows if the Northwest Region can meet her yearly budget without compromising measures under the prevailing circumstances.
The new director of customs is a servant with a very high professional sense of direction. In fact, he is a rare specie of human being. Let us help him rather than tempt him if we want to later be more proud of him than now.
My thanks rather go to the one who appointed him for fitting a square peg in a square hole, his wife for supporting him and to God Almighty be Glory and praise.Abong Samuel Shu

  10. How The Hands Of Cameroon's New Customs Director General Are Tied.

Anyone who knows Mr Edwin Nuvaga Fongod is well aware of his love for country, his towering professional aptitude, blunt hatred for laxity and his passion in getting tasks accomplished.Beyond all these attributes of Edwin is his disarming humility. Having closely known this gentleman for over 30 years Edwin like his late Dad in many ways is a snake charmer. Gentle sometimes to a fault.
One would expect such an embodiment of a square peg in a square hole should revolutionize the customs sector notorious for corruption. Just try doing transatlantic business and at some point you feel like either punching someone in the face or get embedded in business as usual at the Douala port or international airport. Most of the staff relish squeezing fellow citizens for money. It is more normal to stink with bribery and corruption than to release the aroma of probity.
So what is Edwin Fongod ....the fine human being that he is to do? That must be his nightmare even as the honeymoon that comes with such appointments is still very much visible. Power in Cameroon is super concentrated in the hands of President Paul Biya ostensibly as an instrument of absolute control over the entire country. The puzzle is then how the new Customs General Manager can rid the country's income pipeline of impunity when he cannot fire anyone.

Without being apocalyptic it seems to me the most Edwin can do is raise more revenue for the country. If he could cut down those cancerous trees in the customs sector Cameroonians could expect what one Nigerian head of state called the real war against indiscipline. Edwin Nuvaga Fongod does not masks his vehement hatred for financial impropriety; just his hands are tied. Divine NCHAMUKONG

  12. Recognition of Anglophone talent?
Simply "Recognition" not "RECOGNITION OF ANGLOPHONE TALENT" the day we shall stop thinking in terms of anglophone/francophone, bamileke/beti, metah/mankon, nordists/sudists, then we shall start building the real Cameroon. TALENT IS TALENT, MERIT IS MERIT, talent or merit does not have any tribe nor language. the paradox is what we blame others for is exactly what we do. Congrats to Mr. Fongod, a meritorious Cameroonian who has worked to deserve this position. we hope he wil not let us down.

  40. There is no doubt that for once meritocracy has taken precedence over political and demagogic considerations as has been the case in this country for long. If Emergence talk will not be a bluff and a mere slogan we've got to put the right people in the right places. We must stop putting people to head departments for which they have no idea about. Mr. Fongod, you are a technocrat in the business, you must prove the sceptics wrong.

  45. Well said Divine. But I must assure you Ba Fongod is getting into that high position in a house he knows well. The former DG of customs relied on him for her success in that house. That's why Ba Fongod was her closest collaborator and confidant. He is a rare square peg in a square hole and I have no doubt that God being his helper, he WILL SUCCEED. But for that to happen we nee to pray for him for talent and good wi are not all you need in the rotten society where back stabbing corruption and all the ...isms are the order of the day. Congrats again Ba Nkom Edwin Fongod. I know you will make us proud.
